Johnny English

After three Naked Gun movies and three Austin Powers movies, do we really need another spy spoof movie? Well, apparently someone thought we did, and they put up the money for Johnny English. On paper, it’s a good idea: Rowan Atkinson is a great comedic actor and John Malkovich plays a terrific villain. Toss in the pair of screenwriters who penned the last two James Bond films, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a hilarious box office hit, right? On the other hand, is it really possible to make a movie based on a British television ad?

Johnny English is a desk-bound employee of the British secret service. When all of England’s other secret agents are killed, Johnny English receives his first mission: to protect the British crown jewels. This mission is soon revised to: find the British crown jewels after English predictably bumbles their safe-keeping. Standing in his way is the evil Pascal Sauvage, a French prison baron with the worst of intentions. Luckily, English can rely on the help of his straight man/ sidekick Bough and a beautiful stranger named Lorna Campbell.

The best thing that can be said about Johnny English is that it’s short. The movie moves at a quick pace and is over before you know it. That said, too much time is spent setting up the gags. You can see every blunder coming a good five minutes before it happens and when it finally comes around, it’s not very funny. In fact, the best laughs don’t come from the script at all, but from the talented, stretchy-faced Atkinson.

Atkinson’s English is part Mr. Bean, part Inspector Clouseau, but the sum of these two parts is far less funny than one would expect. The high points (English lip-synching to ABBA in the bathroom mirror) are far outnumbered by low points (English emerging from a toilet covered in fecal matter).

Malkovich, as the French villain Sauvage, should have been the saving grace of this film. Unfortunately, the character-as-written is bland and uninspiring. There is little for Malkovich to do except don a creepy stare and speak in a French accent which can only be described as “extreme.”

In the style of Johnny English himself, the filmmakers blundered themselves into un-funny territory and failed at their mission to create a successful spoof. Atkinson is funny and charming as always, but given the below-par script of Johnny English, one wonders if Atkinson’s mission was only it to get away with some Queen Elizabeths.

Bikini Bandits Experience, The Reviewed By Charles Tatum Posted 09/29/04 00:43:57

"Experience Not Required" (Total Crap)

Director Steven Grasse shoots this headache inducing ode to 1970’s B-movie drive-in trash. He should have watched some 1970’s B-movie drive-in trash first.Based on the internet series (reason enough to take pause), there is not a linear plotline, but the film kind of goes like this: four bikini clad criminals are sent to hell. There, the devil sends them back to defile the Virgin Mary. Next, they hide out in Amish country, and then time travel back to 1776. They finally hide out on a porn shoot, looking for an Amish retarded boy, and are saved by Corey Feldman and a bunch of ninjas. This is a merciful fifty-four minutes long. It should have been an insane take on the old grindhouse fare of the 1970’s, but the film makers commit a horrible mistake. A cult film develops a cult following through word of mouth and an intrinsic quality found in the film itself. If you are setting out to specifically make a cult film, then you will try too hard and fail. That is exactly what happens here. The film makers try everything: there are fake home shopping ads for G-Mart tossed in with bad edits, musical interludes, a hairy yoga guy, and lots of annoying animation and graphics. We are treated to real phone conversations between the producers and some obnoxious guy named Zembo who keeps getting beat up on camera when he bothers some people. Finally, Corey Feldman proves he is the most irritating film personality ever (just do the hardcore porn already). The only nudity on display here are guys’ butts. The fearsome foursome go through this without taking off anything but their pride."The Bikini Bandit Experience" is not trashy on a fun level. It is just trash. I had the same reaction to this as I did to "The Underground Comedy Movie," another "eagerly awaited" flick based on some fan boys’ alone time activities- big damn deal. Avoid this at once.

The Movie

It’s kind of funny that Uwe Boll, who has directed less than 10 films, has become so infamous so quickly for churning out such low-grade cinematic junk — when a guy like Jim Wynokrski has been doing it for more than two decades and 65 movies! Crossing several genres, a fistful of pseudonyms, and more Z-grade schlock-piles than Dr. Boll could dream of, Jim Wynorski has directed Deathstalker 2, Sorority House Massacre 2, Dinosaur Island, Body Chemistry 3, Ghoulies 4, The Bare Wench Project, Cheerleader Massacre, and Komodo vs. Cobra — and those are some of the “good” ones.

So when I saw the pseudonym “Jay Andrews” in front of the low-rent “action” movie Crash Landing, I wasn’t fooled. I knew it was my old pal Wynorski. This time around Jim’s working with a 75th generation Die Hard concept, a pair of semi-famous names like Antonio Sabato Jr. and Michael Paré, and a really unconvincing airplane set.

The flick opens with a series of entirely random (and therefore rather amusing) murder scenes. One gal takes a bath with a curling iron, another pair shoot off of a clifftop thanks to a severed brake line. A little later on we find out that the recently-demised women were all flight attendants. And slowly all three of the puzzle pieces come together: A charter flight containing the daughter of a very wealthy businessman is about to be hijacked … and only “Masters” (Antonio Sabato Jr.) can save the day! (The fact that the head hijacker is as intimidating as Tony Shalhoub adds nothing to the intensity of the affair.)

So we ramble through the very dull “thwart the kidnappers” stage of the film, and just when you start to wonder “Hey, wasn’t Michael Paré supposed to be in this movie?” — the guy shows up as an army captain who must build a really quick runway if he wants to accomodate the incoming airliner. Oh, and it’s raining really bad, too. Just to add a little extra tension.

Really, you’ve seen all of this stuff before, only not with dialogue this outrageously stupid or performances this embarrasingly ripe. (The young lady who plays the intended kidnapee delivers her lines as if she can’t wait to get off camera.) Frankly, if you can sit through the whole of Crash Landing without chuckling at the flick’s bald-faced ineptitude, then you’re a kinder movie-watcher than I am. (Either that or the movie put you to sleep.)

The DVD

Video: A fairly flat and undazzling widescreen transfer. Looks about the same as it would on TV. Like, basic cable TV.

Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, with optional Spanish subtitles. Audio quality is passable enough, provided you actually want to hear the dialogue.

Extras: Just a handful of Echo Bridge trailers.

Final Thoughts

There’s fun junk and then there’s just plain junk. Despite a few unintentionally hilarious lines of dialogue and “out to lunch” acting performances, Crash Landing is more witlessly tiresome than it is schlockily entertaining.

Plus, I think we can finally put the Die Hard concept to bed already, can’t we?

A semi-documentary movie about the terrorist attack on the Israeli team
at the Olympic Games at Munich 1972.

In opposite to later adaptations of the same historical event, "21
Hours at Munich" was shot on the original locations. However, it is a
little bit less of a documentary than it seems at first, it does take a
bit of creative freedom in the narration. Which has been criticized by
some reviewers, but makes it a better movie after all. Excellent
performances by William Holden as the police chief and Franco Nero as
the terrorist leader, whose motivation is explained remarkably well. He
is not just the one-dimensional Hollywood villain firing bullets in all
directions. That was important to make the film believable, as well as
the discussions between the politicians. Even it makes the movie quite
wordy, the reasons why and when and how the police fights the
terrorists are explained well. "21 Hours at Munich" is a movie you
should watch, first for the tragic history that hopefully will never be
repeated, second for its solid story telling and acting which is above
the genre average.

Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, The Reviewed By EricDSnider Posted 08/11/04 16:13:02

"Dear Garry Marshall: Please do not direct another film as long as you live." (Pretty Bad)

To watch "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," you should be required not just to have seen its predecessor, but to have LOVED it. Merely having liked it will not be sufficient to carry you through the less-focused, more-useless sequel, and if your disinterest in the subject prevented you from seeing the first film altogether, then surely you have not had a change of heart in the intervening years, unless you have suddenly became a 13-year-old girl. This is young-girl wish-fulfillment, nothing more than harmless, vicarious fairy-tale living. The 12-to-14-year-old girls who watch it will get to see their representative — Anne Hathaway, returning as Mis Thermopolis, the dowdy teen who discovered she was a princess — kiss cute boys, get treated like royalty, have a wild slumber party, wear beautiful dresses, and have a storybook wedding. The only way the movie could pander more directly to its target audience is if free ponies were being given out at the theater. It’s been five years, and Mia has just graduated from college and is preparing to take on full-time duties as princess of Genovia, the fictional Swiss-Italio-Franco sovereignty where her grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), reigns. Grandma is stepping down soon for reasons not given (perhaps Genovia’s royalty has a mandatory retirement age), and Mia will take over. But there’s a snag: Conniving Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies, in a rare non-troll performance), a member of parliament, points out the little-known and never-enforced and highly implausible rule that any reigning queen of Genovia must be married before she can take the throne. Whom does Mabrey suggest as the alternate successor, since Mia is single? Why, his nephew Sir Nicholas (Chris Pine), of course.Parliament gives Mia 30 days to get married or forfeit the kingdom to Sir Nicholas. This means we must endure a montage of Mia encountering a variety of ill-suited suitors, including all the obvious ones that you could think of if you were writing this movie, including very old men, very young men, and very dorky men. (Shonda Rhimes, who actually did write the movie — and the Britney Spears film "Crossroads" before it — wins the prize for including, yes, EVERY obvious joke that the average viewer could have come up with herself.)She settles on the bland Andrew (Callum Blue), Duke of Kentworthy, even though she’s not in love with him, while Nicholas and his uncle seek to sabotage the engagement and prevent the wedding. Mia and Nicholas, being rivals, naturally must fall in love, and once they do, I have to wonder why they don’t just marry each other. Cuz that sure would have gotten the movie over faster. But never mind. Almost the entire cast from the first film is back, including characters who have no purpose in the new story. This includes Mia’s mother, stepfather and best friend, as well as the "hilarious" hairdresser Paolo (Larry Miller), all of whom sort of stand around the movie with their hands in their pockets waiting for someone to give them something to do. In fact, this movie is so intent on going nowhere that it actually introduces NEW characters JUST to give them nothing to do! There’s an over-eager young intern training to be head of security, a few new friends for Mia (including one played by Raven-Simone), and Tom Poston — good ol’ Tom Poston, evidently in dire need of work — as a befuddled old Lord, all shoved into the movie and then forgotten. The director is once again Garry Marshall, and Garry Marshall once again never shot a scene he didn’t like. Even with a running time pushing two hours — lengthy for a kids’ movie — he can’t bear to part with anything. Not the silly slumber party, not the sequence at Mia’s college graduation, nothing. Every last shamelessly slapstick morsel is wedged in here.Marshall does achieve something noteworthy, though: He has Julie Andrews sing, the first full-fledged public singing she’s done since her ill-fated throat operation in 1997. (She’s done half-singing, half-talking performances a few times since then, but not a complete, honest-to-goodness song.) Her voice, though no longer as rangy as it once was, is still crisp and beautiful. Naturally, Marshall has to ruin it by bringing Raven-Simone in to duet the last half with her; after all, the movie’s audience doesn’t know or care about Julie Andrews. But I bet they’ll be thrilled with Raven!!!!!!!!Andrews and Hector Elizondo are the highlights of the film, as they were of its predecessor, with Elizondo playing Clarisse’s head of security and secret boyfriend. They are elegant together, and funny.Anne Hathaway still isn’t doin’ it for me. Put her in all the movies you want, Hollywood, I still don’t think she’s as pretty as I’m supposed to, and the fact that she keeps choosing dumb movies like this one and "Ella Enchanted" doesn’t make her seem any less ordinary to me.

Be Cool is the sequel to 1995’s Get Shorty, and once again we follow the story of Chilli Palmer, a loan shark turned movie producer who now wants to enter the music world. Having not seen Get Shorty myself nor my friends, we were wondering why wasn’t this called ‘Get Shorty II’, and apparently is because both movies are based on books by Elmore Leonard, and word of mouth say those are better.

People I’ve talked to don’t think Get Shorty is great but they can’t wait for Be Cool. I have no interest at all in seeing Get Shorty, and I don’t think Be Cool is good. A couple of characters are great, but the movie is poor.

John Travolta plays Chilli Palmer, who wants to get into the music business by managing a young upcoming singer called Lynda Moon (played by real life upcoming singer Christina Milian), whose current manager, Raji (Vince Vaughn), is not going to get her anywhere any time soon. He also thinks he’s a black pimp. Raji’s bodyguard Elliot Wilhelm (The Rock) is a not sure he’s gay aspiring actor, and his partner at the discography is Nick Carr (Harvey Keitel). Nothing to say about him.

Chilli is trying to help Edie Athens’s (Uma Thurman) discography by getting Lynda, but they have another problem as they owe a lot of money to Sin LaSalle (Cedric The Entertainer), a hiphop music manager who around with his posse which includes Dabu (Andre 3000 of Outkast), a hiphop superstar who likes guns but can’t handle them. The movie goes around and around complicated situations for our leads Chilli and Edie including the Russian mob, the cops and Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith) playing himself.

The characters go from wasted (Danny DeVito and James Woods) to easy laughs but tiring (Vince Vaughn thinks he’s black!) to boring performances (Travolta and Thurman). I only loved The Rock (the big guys are getting funnier between him and Vin Diesel) and Christina Milian. Great characters. Though her probably because I’ve never heard her sing in real life, but this looks a way to get her mainstreamed.

Uma Thurman has a very hot and sexy opening scene in a bikini (her only good scene), and then her character turns into an uninteresting woman following Chilli everywhere, even to a bar for drinks where they dance. We all remember the greatness that was Travolta and Thurman’s dance scene in the revolutionary and super cool Pulp Fiction, so yeah, they must do it again! But it doesn’t work here. It’s boring and long.

Cedric The Entertainer does his usual comedy, nothing new. Same for Harvey Keitel who plays his very repeated tough old bad guy with power. John Travolta is the biggest disappointment here, with the same boring facial expression all the time, being calmed all the time against any situation and telling everybody the title of the movie. And that title doesn’t work by the way, because yes, they all keep the calm and everything, but they’re not cool. They should’ve called this ‘Be Calm’ instead.

At the start of the movie, Travolta and Woods an idea for a movie, and that’s what this movie’s story turns into. They also talk about actors making sequels just for the money, and that’s what this movie turns into too, a moneymaking disappointment.

Hollywood Homicide (2003) / Action-Comedy MPAA Rated: PG-13 for violence, sexual situations, and language          Running Time: 116 min.

Cast: Harrison Ford, Josh Hartnett, Bruce Greenwood, Lena Olin, Isaiah Washington, Lolita Davidovich, Keith David, Dwight Yoakam Director: Ron SheltonScreenplay: Robert Souza, Ron Shelton

Hollywood Homicide is nothing new in the world of buddy cop movies.  In fact, it is a prime example of the formula.  There’s the two eccentric partners, lots of side gags, and a very boring plot.  It has all of the strengths and all of the weaknesses that the formula requires, but like almost any formula, it tends to work if you manage to do it well.  Hollywood Homicide may not be the freshest cop film to come down the pipe, but it clearly was created to entertain more than anything else, and on that level, it succeeds in its goal.

Ford plays Joe Gavilan, a homicide detective working the eccentric street of Hollywood.  Like most people in Hollywood, he has a side career, that of a real estate salesman, and he rarely lets his "day job" interfere with a prospective sale.  His partner, K.C. Calden (Hartnett) also has two separate career interests, fitness/yoga instructor and aspiring actor.    The film follow the two on a case involving some rappers who have been gunned down, and further clues lead them to suspect that they may have been slain within by someone within the industry.

It’s rare when I will recommend a film strictly on the frills and thrills over the main plot, but Hollywood Homicide is all about the side stories.  Even when dealing with the main storyline, and in the thick of the climax, the subplots still emerge time and again.  Normally, this might detract from the overall experience, but in this case, the main plot is so dull that it would have been a disaster without something to spruce it up.  Luckily, Ron Shelton has made a career out of good hybrid comedies, with such fun films as Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump, and Tin Cup among his more memorably funny efforts.  For the screenplay, he enlisted a real-life cop, Robert Souza, who ironically has a side job of his own as a screenwriter, and together they made a modestly entertaining throwaway thriller.

Fans of Harrison Ford will most likely be mixed in their feelings seeing him do a film like this.  He does a terrific job, and definitely makes the film fun to watch, but anyone looking for him to return to making great films again will obviously be disappointed that Hollywood Homicide is the kind of mindless fluff he chooses to make nowadays.  Hartnett, who struggled with his comedic side in the awful 40 Days and 40 Nights, manages to hold his own playing off of Ford’s sardonic demeanor with a refreshingly lighthearted, casual performance.

Hollywood Homicide is the kind of film that you will probably want to wait for video to see.  I suspect the tolerance for this kind of thing will meet better reviews for those seeing on the small screen, as it is little more than a big budget cop show.  If you like cop flicks with little touches of humor and goofball characterizations, a la Lethal Weapon, Hollywood Homicide is a passable choice.  It’s all in fun.

Evelyn (Video Preview).avi10.52 MBDOWNLOAD

The Movie:

There’s nothing terribly wrong about “Evelyn“, but the movie suffers from a lack of ambition. It’s holiday fare that I couldn’t help but feel as if I’ve seen before - a family is separated, a courtroom battle is fought, and the happy ending that anyone can probably see coming a mile away occurs. Directed by Bruce Beresford (”Driving Miss Daisy”, “Double Jeopardy”), the film stars Pierce Brosnan as Desmond Doyle, loving father of two sons and a daughter. During the holiday season, his wife decides to run off with another man. Early in the film, which takes place in 50’s Ireland, the authorities get word of the fact that Desmond is a broke, rather alcholic single father, and take his children away.

The first half of the film is a so-so effort, following Desmond’s attempts to break his daughter out of jail and clean up his act, with the help of a barmaid (Juliana Margulies, largely under-used). This first half moves along fairly well, even though the plot seems familiar - even though yes, this is based on a true story - and some of the characters don’t seem terribly well-defined. The acting - especially by Brosnan and supporting efforts by Adian Quinn, Stephen Rea and Alan Bates - is what carries the interest over the predictable parts.

The film’s second half is where “Evelyn” starts to get its act together, if never entirely. After failing to get his kids back even when he turns his financial situation around (an old law states that the mother must also sign papers - and in this case, she’s nowhere to be found). Desmond hires a trio of lawyers (Bates, Rea and Quinn) and tries to take on the court in a battle that will become historical when it overturns some of the laws on the books at that time. That’s basically interesting, but the way that Beresford handles it simply offers the bare basics. The fact that this story will have a happy ending is without question - it’s just unfortunate that it never seems like the film isn’t going to have a happy ending. There’s little drama or tension from point A to B, and an attempt to add suspense by having the judges seem to be going negative, then saying “however” three or four times seems clumsy. I never felt the film fully illustrated what an enormous task it was to take on the court system at the time, either.

Its to Beresford’s credit that much of the film does keep from being overly sappy, but when it does, it’s too dry. When it does become sappy, it becomes overly so (particularly when Evelyn discusses how her recently deceased grandfather told her that the sun’s rays are “guardian angels”). The film certainly wants to be feel-good and emotional (as a result, it always feels like it needs a bit more realistic grit, too), but it’s a little too manipulative and the story feels underdeveloped (the film introduces Evelyn’s brothers at the beginning and then essentially forgets about them).

Oh, but the acting. One of the few aspects of “Evelyn” that make it as successful as it is is the performances. Brosnan takes a fairly uncomplex character and turns it into something better, offering a performance that’s sincere, moving and very enjoyable. Rea, Quinn and Bates do sometimes outshine Brosnan, but everyone’s pretty good here, even with so-so material. The performances make it worthy of rental consideration for those seeking something in the genre. It certainly could have been better, though.

The DVD

VIDEO: MGM presents “Evelyn” in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. This is a fair transfer; I suspect that some of the issues that I find with it are part of the film’s cinematography. The picture lacks any depth, while sharpness and detail are inconsistent at best - some scenes look rather soft in comparison to others, while a thin layer of grain doesn’t help matters, either. It really never appears very well-defined. Although the material certainly requires a rather subdued look, similar films (Andrew Dunn’s cinematography on “Liam”, for example) have been more visually interesting.

Aside from the softness and somewhat bothersome grain, there weren’t too many other issues. The print didn’t exhibit any major flaws, only a few minor specks. Edge enhancement wasn’t noticed, but a few little traces of compression artifacts were. The film’s color palette was rather subdued, although a brighter color showed through on occasion. Flesh tones remained accurate and natural.

SOUND: “Evelyn” is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. As one might expect from the material, this is a largely subdued affair. The score, which is rather sappy at times, still does sound quite clear across the front soundstage. Surrounds largely go unused, aside from some very minor ambience in a scene or two. Dialogue remained crisp and clear, with even the accidents easily understood.

EXTRAS: While it didn’t do much at the box office, MGM has still prepared quite a Special Edition for the film. The DVD’s main features are two audio commentaries, one from director Bruce Beresford and one from actor/producer Pierce Brosnan and producer Beau St. Clair. Both tracks communicate the filmmaker’s passion for the project quite well, but the Brosnan track is a bit more involving. Although surprisingly subdued, the actor still brings a lot to the table, discussing his involvement in the project, talking about the character, and sharing some stories from the set. He offers some good insights here and seems comfortable with the commentary process - I hope to hear more from him in the future.

Two documentaries - one about the story behind “
Evelyn” and one a general “making of” run about 19 and 21 minutes, respectively. Both are worth viewing; the former does a good job giving more information about the historical background, while the latter is well-filmed and informative.

A trailer, photo gallery, recommendations and a soundtrack promo round out the supplemental section.

Final Thoughts: Those seeking a moving drama could do worse than “Evelyn“. The picture offers fine performances, but the story lacks a depth it needed to be more involving and moving. MGM’s DVD offers so-so audio/video quality, but lots of supplements. Recommended as a rental.

Tom Hanks (The Polar Express, The Terminal) stars as renowned professor of historical religious symbolism Robert Langdon, who finds himself embroiled in a deadly web of intrigue when an old crony ends up murdered in the Louvre.  A set of cryptic clues are left behind, leading Langdon to join forces with police cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Tautou, L’Auberge Espagnole) to evade the cops and other religious zealots into the reasons behind what ends up being a series of mysterious murders, the answers to which threaten to rewrite over two millennia of religious history and faith.

If ever there were a book that practically begged to be made into a miniseries, Dan Brown’s phenomenal bestseller, "The Da Vinci Code", is it.  It’s not that the book is excessively long, but it does feature a dense amount of exposition for a thriller.  Most of the intrigue of the book comes not through any of the actions of the main characters themselves, but rather, in the presentation of the theories contained within.  While many other authors and historians can take credit for the bulk of the interesting content of Brown’s novel, Brown still manages to have dished it all up in a very palatable, concise, and thought-provoking package, making his book an absorbing and very fast read for anyone that has ever picked it up.

Condensing "The Da Vinci Code" down to the length of a feature-length film would seem like an arduous task, as it would be nearly impossible to give us all of the information that takes us from point A to point Z without hours and hours of talking heads and narration.  However, hugely popular novels are always made into movies regardless of whether they work or not, and despite the fact that the book practically mandates more time and care in the explanation of centuries of history, art and religion, the powers-that-be, in an effort to strike while the iron is hot, pushed the adaptation forward and kept it to a mere 2 1/2 hours in length — astonishing, given the amount of locale changes, character motivations, and pseudo history lessons that are featured in the novel.

So, how did they do justice to the book?  The short answer is that they didn’t.  Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman’s (Cinderella Man, I Robot) treatment of the novel is to concentrate more on the thriller elements of the book, keeping any explanatory information down to a bare minimum in order to push forward the plot.  All things considered, Goldsman is successful in making sure all of the plot elements are given their proper due, but in the process, he has all but completely muted the very reason why the book proved so popular.  People didn’t read "The Da Vinci Code" because they were interested in Robert Langdon and his quest to solve a rudimentary mystery so much as they were interested in hearing about very detailed theories on the interconnectedness of key figures in the history of man, how they all relate to each other, and how they differ from the commonly held belief system held today by millions, if not billions, of people.

The best parts of were ones that had little or nothing to do with Langdon, Neveu, or any other character in the film.  The real meat of it is that, for millions of readers out there of Brown’s book, this was the first time that the very compelling questions about the divinity of Jesus, the origins of Christianity, the power of the Catholic Church, and the location and identity of the Holy Grail were talked about in such a fascinating and engrossing fashion.  It might all be balderdash, but within the construct of the novel, you believe every word of it, chapter and verse.

As in the book, so it is in the film, as the best part of Ron Howard’s (The Missing, A Beautiful Mind) The Da Vinci Code are the moments when the importance and scope of their great mystery are revealed to us in the audience.  Unfortunately, these moments are put on the backburner for lengthy periods of time, in an effort to get the characters moving along to their next logical step and still keep the length of the film reasonable for your average movieplex schedule.

By sucking out the bulk of the exegetical material, what we have left is an occasionally interesting mystery that dishes up many interesting ideas that aren’t really given their proper respect in time to find truly resonant.  Just as Dan Brown’s "The Da Vinci Code" proved to be a big hit for readers unfamiliar with the writings of the original authors that developed such a fascinating set of theories, I suspect that those unfamiliar with Dan Brown’s novel might get more mileage out of hearing about many of these things for the first time in the movie, even they are given comparatively short shrift.

I’m not really a book reviewer, and here I’ve gone against my critical instincts by talking more about book vs. movie comparisons than the merits of the film as a standalone entity, something I avoid doing when I can.  Try as I might to divorce myself from thinking about the book while watching the film is less than easy, but when evaluating the film, I find that I must do the best I can.  Howard has chosen to make his Da Vinci Code a somber and bleak thriller, with very little comic relief.  While an inferior film in terms of originality and depth, the previous year’s National Treasure captured the spirit that The Da Vinci Code could have had to be a grand scale entertainment feature.  Alas, what we have is a sporadically engaging film that is long and unpleasant, with barebones character development, confusing motivations, and unrealized potential to be truly a gripping eye-opener for millions. Although the events play out as important, the approach and delivery should have bordered on apocalyptic, and yet, important pieces of the puzzle fall into place without the necessary sense of significance to find them anything more than mildly engaging.

Suffice it to say, I have read "The Da Vinci Code", as well as Dan Brown’s other novels, and find them to be interesting thrillers more fascinating for the big picture ideas than for the little details of the actual mystery at their cores.  Unfortunately, The Da Vinci Code, the movie, is mostly about getting all the smaller, plot-driven details right, which is quite a bland way to explore such elevated and controversial revelations that were featured quite prominently, and with vastly more intelligence and respect, in book form.

The year is 2019; the city is Los Angeles. Earth has undergone massive population explosions in the urban areas, the city landscape is a mish-mash of every culture, and almost everywhere you go there are advertisements. The most prominent of these advertisements is a floating space-barge advertising the Off-World colonies, offering excitement and adventure. It appears there’s much excitement to be true, when five replicants (android-like creations constructed to work in off-world colonies) commit mutiny and escape to Earth to find a way to increase their four year lifespan, causing a Blade Runner named Deckard (Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark), a cop whose job is to hunt down replicants, to come out of retirement.

Very loosely based on the Philip K. Dick novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", this is director Ridley Scott’s (Alien, White Squall) baby all the way. Despite being a box-office failure, an ever-growing amount of film-lovers consider this film to be a sci-fi masterpiece. You can count me as one of them.

Breathtaking visual effects highlight this gorgeous and thought-provoking futuristic film noir tale, with an amazing score by Vangelis. This is more than a simple detective story. It is a mutli-layered and profound film that speaks to such weighty issues as humanity, memories, dreams, and a vision of the future that changed the face of science fiction forever.

I’m reminded of the scene in 12 Monkeys, where it is remarked by Bruce Willis regarding Vertigo seeming different upon watching it now instead of when he was younger, not because the movie changes, but because he has changed, and notices different things upon viewing it. Blade Runner is one of those films for me.

My personal pick for the greatest science fiction film of all time.
